Beautiful British Burgundy on the Bay

Very nice, especially the finish. Well-cared for. Tough to tell with lighting if there is any show-through on the back of the maple. Although it has had some major humid storage, by the rustiness of screw heads. One knob gone, replaced with reissue knob. The bridge PUP cover is not original, is a newer replacement. Good TRC and headstock, can't tell much neck detail but looks OK. Good original case. Worth $2000 to $2500 in a UK market?

Interesting how much Burgundy changed in such a short time. Late 60's to early 70's was Eggplantglo, but sometimes there some brighter red ones escaped. This one is bright red, much moreso than my '74 4005.

I had NO clue it was burgundy! I have seen four different shades of burgundy so far, and I honestly though this one was a very nice shade of candy apple red. My original 1971 4001 21-fretter was eggplant burgundy. Looked black unless you were in direct sun, or a very white pinbeam spot on stage.

Burgundy didn't "change" as much as it was just "inconsistent." It seems that the "Eggplantglo" ones were in the early '70s, but there were probably some that were redder like this '74. It seems that it was simply a matter of how the guy running the spray gun was doing that day. Despite its inconsistency, Burgundy can best be described as a translucent wine red, so you should be able to see wood grain underneath, or at least the shedua "skunk" stripe down the middle on the '70s 4001s like this one. "Candy-apple red" is a good description of translucent red over a metallic base coat, known in Rick circles as "Ruby."
Sorry, Elys, but the knob in question is a standard knob, just missing it's metal top insert. Why do you think the bridge PUP cover "is not original"? It is installed wrong, though; it should be tucked under the surround, not on top of it.

Sorry, your eyes and monitor contrast of dark colors are better than mine. Couldn't tell that it was only the cap disc that was missing, to turn it black.
The luster is different, more uncorroded shiny, and unworn, unlike the rest of the bass.
Of course, this could also be consistent with the cover being taken off early in the life of the bass, wrapped and stored safely away in the case flap, and only recently put back on finally by the seller, someone who did not know how to mount it. But it looks too clean and unscratched to match this bass.

Beautiful. Wow! This is just like mine, a beautiful burgundy one. Yes. Well, mine is just 7 months younger (Feb.75)
