Does anyone know what inlay material was used for the fingerboard dots on early '60s 4001S/RM1999 models?
I've tried some searches on this, but came up empty...
Maybe Andy or Atsushi can answer this?
Cheers
Sean

We used a hole punch on a drill press to make the dots from celluloid binding material that was .090 thick. The newer ones are punched from vinyl material. Also, the drill was not running at the time we did this.

Actual mother of pearl dots are fairly inexpensive, so that's what I use on my customized Rickys.

My days of "experimentation" were from late 69 to around 76. I was stationed in SF in 70-72. Great concerts at the Fillmore, great food at the Spaghetti Factory in North Beach, great fish and chips at Edna's for brunch on Sunday, just up the street from Lighthouse Bookstore, etc, etc. Did I forget to mention Golden Gate Park, any weekend?
I love that city - just not its politics.......anymore!!!!!

1967 The Summer of Love. That old saying..If you remember the 60's, you probably weren't there. My friend and I flew from L.A. to Monterey for the POP Festival, talk about trippin. Everybody there was aglow. It's a wonder any of us have any brain cells left...

Now back to Rick dot material..We also put M O P markers in a few as special orders, and all the fretless ones had M O P dots along with red side dots at every fret position. Once a month I would punch out guitar and bass fingerboard dots from the same material we used for body binding.

It had a Vox Westminster Bass head sitting on it too.....
And it was in the early 80's in Seattle of all places......
