Earlier this week I was privileged to attend an evening of Beatles songs, performed by members of Huntington Beach High School's 'Academy of Performing Arts'. Beautifully done, with the entire Sgt. Pepper album as the second half. no mean feat. (I was there to see my nephew Garrett, keyboardist.)

Such a nice treat to see Kenny Howes as a director/coach/mentor as well as supplemental all around awesome musician for this extravaganza, including the appearance of some nice RICS (esp liked the Comstock on Here Comes the Sun).

Well done, Kenny and kids!! They sounded spectacular.

I actually even enjoyed 'Being for the Benefit of Mr.Kite' this time around, after a lifetime habit of skipping that one, and always flipping the record over a tad early.

The program notes really did include the tag line 'it was 40 years ago today.' And, it made us 'elders' feel even a bit more so, describing the Beatles as one of the most important groups of that 'rock era' (as in, paleolithic era, mesozoic era, rock era, etc..)

Well, I remember it like it was yesterday. Image

I had heard about Kenny conducting the band and was wondering if anyone was going to attend! I would have loved to be there, sounds like it was really wonderful.

yeah it was pretty ambitious, and they really pulled it off. It was great to see the kids so enthusiastic about these songs. Who knows maybe they video'ed the next night? I'll keep an eye out. Image

Well not quite 40 years, but I do remember my fifth grade teacher being so obsessed with the Sgt.Pepper album, which had recently come out. She defied the administration, (rebel that she was) and xeroxed (ditto'ed) all the lyrics for her students. I still have vivid memories of singing every one of those songs in class... just so excellent.

I was in 7th grade in 1968 and I had the coolest music teacher. He had the best (in my mind) sound system and freakin rocked the school every hour. He handwrote all the lyrics on a clear overlay for the overhead projector and we sang mostly Beatle tunes all through my jr. high career. Mr Sage.. Busch Jr, High Centerline Michigan very cool dude.
