Interesting SVT comparison

Well, I took the 95 SVT classic head out to the church and it sounded wonderful with the 4x10HLF Classic cab. It is too loud with the 8x10. The B2RE sounds better with the 8x10! So......... I am offing the B2RE today and deciding what to do with the cab. I think I should trade it in. If there ever was a time I needed that much, I could just get another 410HLF, although I don't think I will ever need it!

Turn the volume down, they will sound good in any room unless they are very tiny and you are right on top of them, I have found very few rooms in which an 8 x 10 is ridiculous although there are a few I know, these rooms are tiny.
How many ohms is your 4 x 10?
I also wrote this in your other post but thought you might see it here first:
If the Classic sounds worse in the 8 x 10 it probably has a problem as 8 x 10's are a lot clearer than 4 x 10's and will reveal problems as the head will usually be overpowered before the cab will be. You may have old tubes in it including the preamp tubes.

My 4x10 is 4 ohms also. And I seemed to go from nothing to too much with the SVT and the 8x10. I know John A has the same 4x10 and he loves it with his SVT's. I think he has a II and a III.

It's kinda like driving a Ferrari to the store for milk, in my case!

And thanks Bob, I trust anything you have to say about SVT's!!!

For what its worth, I dont currently own an SVT, ut I do have a BSE 410 HLF cab.

Very punchy and great sounding cab. I played bars, clubs and outdoor gigs with this cab an it never failed me.

I have always wanted to own an 8-10 cab. I think it would be the ultimate for outdoor gigs.

I agree with that, for sure! Nothing else can touch it in the big spaces! I had 2 15's back in the day('72ish) and thought I was IT, I knew nothing of the big boys. No money and no exposure, being a SD lad newly imported into California! I had a 100 watt Sunn head, and a silver "tuck n roll" 2x15 Plush cab. It was great on the ship!

I saw my very fist amp today a Bassman 10! Wow! I got an Eden Nemesis NC 200 instead. With that amp, I can plug into my 4x10, incase the tubes go in the SVT! My Hartke Kickback needed 8 ohms and my 4x10 is 4 so.... Now I have a backup.

One last thing, I also offed the Ibanez I got the other day. i had too many issues wit the neck. I bit the bullet, paid a little more, and got a Warwick Rock bass 5'er. The Corvette with the active jazz pu's. Great range of tone and nicely playable. Not real crazy about the color (almond sunburst, they call it), but it IS just a backup while the Ric gets sent out.

How old is the head Charlie, is it a 95? Are the power tubes original? Oh and don't trust everything I have to say about them, I certainly don't know everything and I can be over the top occasionally too. I also like the sound of some GK stuff.

It is a 95, and I don't know about the tubes. I played it today at church. The only thing is, I forgot to turn it off, and just went into standby. It produces enough hum to bother the first couple of rows during the sermon. I also went wireless for the first time. I went out to the middle and found I needed way more mids. I cranked the mid and the treble all the way. pushed the hi button, and had that other thingy set on 3. Remember, I am playing chromes! Anyway, that did the trick. My thing is, on the fast tunes, I switch to the bridge pu for max mids. I do have the cap mod on. On slow stuff, the switch is either in the middle, and I'm playing close to the neck, or up, and playing back over the bridge pu. I move my right hand forward and backward during songs to get a different sound for a different part of the song. We have no drums, so I'm it in the rhythm section! I have found it is no good to play some of my high parts without a drum. I need to be down at the bottom, filling up that space.

Only Sunn beats Ampeg in the Purists heart. And of course, old pre-Fender Sunn at that Image

This from an ardent Old and New Ampeg owner....

For me the ampeg b2r is the best sounding head I have ever played through ... but there are many others that sound good ...

A Mesa 400 is letting me part with my precious '74 V4-B. Trust me, I was an Ampeg diehard until I got this head.

I love my SVT, but I also love the Sunn sound and have a completely rebuilt and modified 200S I put together and also have a 2000S. Someone gave me a Sorado too recently. I have to get some good JBL 2x15 cabinets made next....I have the speakers already.
