Anyone know the difference between the two? I had considered going for the Squire bass but, as much as I admire his playing, I just don't go for the signature on the pickquard.

I cannot make a comparison, since I never happened to play a 4001V63 (as far as I know, there are only 3 specimens in France).
The fingerboard of the 4001CS is very particular. It's hard to describe, but it has nothing to do with that of a 4001/4003, or even that of a 4001S/4003S.
About the signature on the pickguard, a 4001V63 pickguard is compliant with a 4001CS. I don't remember the name of the guy, but I saw someone in the www.rickbeat.com gallery who replaced the pickguard of his 4001CS with a 4001V63 one.
All the best,
JL

I think the main difference is the color ... I have played several v63's but I have never touched a Chris Squire model ...

I've owned them both simutaneously. To my ear and hands there was no difference at all. I could be wrong though - perhaps there are minor differences??

I thought the CS has the .0047 cap and the v63 did not, or has that been changed?

Mine sounded identical. My CS did have thinner frets though.

The V63 is a re-issue of what Squire started out with isnt it?

For what it's worth, regarding the pickguard issue- I have two 4001CS's and oddly enough, the pickup selector switches are in slightly but noticeably different spots. In other words, I would not be able to interchange them. So if you were to switch pickguards, be sure to take a few quick measurements first.
