Refretting

A friend mentioned to me the other day that a refet for a maple fretboard is more difficult and expensive than for one of rosewood.
Curmudge, is this true and if so why?

They are the same and either one can be lacquered or finished with C.V. or not

The Curmudgeon himself answers:
It could be more expensive, but only if the luthier in question is putting the frets into the maple board in the same weird way that Fender used to--from the side instead of the top.
Hence the rumors!
But there is no reason why Fender maple-neck frets cannot be pulled from the top, and reinstalled the same way, whether by press or by hammer.
So the cost would be the same.

Curmudge --- what about the Ric 650 model Maple Fretboards ? How do they differ ?

Peter, most repair shops I think charge more for a maple board because they have to re-lacquer it after they're done. With rosewood this is usually not required.
Most shops think in terms of Fender and Gibson and for the most part these companies leave the rosewood un-finished.
If I were considering having a re-fret done and the shop was going to charge a substantial amount more to do a maple fret board, I would look for another shop.

Nearly every shop who lacquer maple boards (read: Fender boards!), uses exactly that--nitro lacquer. And many use rattle cans, too.
There's nothing easier than shooting nitro out of a rattle can, unless its shooting fish in a barrel...

Yea Paul I agree.
I was thinking more alone the lines of a vintage piece that would need the nitro tinted to match the rest of the guitar.

There's a market--pretinted nitro in a rattle can.
Stew-Mac, are you listening?

Separated at birth, John? And there's Aitch in the background of the pic appearing as if he's fallen asleep standing up.
