Have you seen the two auctions for the Rics that are stung the opposite way? He says theres more jangle that way and thats why 99% of 12s are like that.

People always have some sort of explanations to prove their way is better than other, more traditional ways of doing things. They think they are improving things. Usually they're not, they're just airing out their egos.

Maturity leads folks to stop making claims, find what works and know why. Change for change's sake is wasteful of time and brainpower, and ignores the fact that, it something's been a certain way for awhile, there's usually a good reason, and how good the reason is, is in direct proportion to how long things have been that way.

(In every way but government and bureaucracy, of course.)

(And religion.)

Strange that someone could even think that!

Rick guitars are known for what?
Their JANGLE!

So stringing them the way everyone else's 12 strings are strung would make more jangle?

YEAH, RIGHT!

Wait, I know this one. It's a formula, I think. Something like the heat of the beat times the square of the glare over the angle of the jangle. ...or he could just be full of $#!t.

Rick 12-strings that are strung the wrong way give me a pain in the nut.

Not to mention the bridge.

?!

Rickenbackers are the origin of electric twelve "jangle". How could stringing a Rickenbacker other than the way it was strung at the factory give the guitar more jangle?!

Nuts.

I went to see The Church in Portland, OR in 2004. Marty played a jetglo McGuinn signature that was strung up TRADITIONAL.

I got to hang out afterwards with the band. I asked Marty why he had his RIC strung up upside down. Marty said, "I like it better that way."

I used to have a 360/12
I wanted to leave it strung as Rickenbacker intended but as I'm a finger picker my nails would never seem to hit the octave strings and it ended up sounding like a 6 string. I reversed the E,A and D strings and it was better for me.
I found the normal Ric stringing worked great with a plectrum, but I just can't play like that...
I eventually sold the 360/12 to a friend and got a double neck guitar (simply more practical for my use) which was strung normal. I then reversed the G strings (as I pick up via index finger on that one) it was then the same stringing as the Ric that I sold. The double neck played well but I had to do a lot of work to get it to sound anything like the quality of the 360....

Don't fret, I still have 2 ricky basses and perhaps onday will get another 6 or 12 (perhaps a 330/6 if I can find one cheap enough).

Yeah, I know what I did to the 360 was kind of wrong but it worked for me..

Makes perfect sense to me, weemac. If we can't play our instruments, something's gotta give, hey?

Here's hoping you find Rickenpeace with a nice Rick 12 string someday.
