I have a '76 4001 that I recently pulled out of the closet after about 10 years. I got it back in working order (new pickups from Sergio and new strings). Even though I have had a blast playing it the last couple of weeks it is going back in storage. When I put it up a few years ago I just put it away just like it was the last time I played it, standard tuning etc. I also knew then it had a dead pickup. I probably didn't even wipe it down. Now I want to make sure it stays well preserved. One concern is a sizable buckle rash on the back, should I stabilize this somehow? It there a good checklist anywhere I should follow?

What steps should I take to make sure it is still in good shape when I pull it out of storage at some unknown time in the future?

The buckle rash is not a problem. Just tune the bass to pitch and store it in its case in a place that does not get too hot, cold, dry, or damp. Avoid attics as they are usually not environmentally controlled. Avoid the basement if the floors and walls are usually damp. If you do store it in a basement, try to keep it up off of the floor. Closets or under beds are good if temps are pretty constant. Use a case humidifier if you are in a dry climate. but don't forget to moisten it once in a while.

For what its worth I store mine in their cases standing on end.
