I picked up a 1982 4001 for rebuild. I noticed makers marks in the pickup router areas. Is this common?

Yup. Cavity graffiti is in most of the Rics I've seen. My old 4005 had 4001 scrawled in the cavity.

Hi Chris,
Welcome to the Forum, as Scott says it's very common for the Rickenbacker folks to initial or sign their names to their work.Several Forum members including me have "Maria" singed in the cavity.

I had a '66 360-12 marked "Loretta" in the cavity.

I have to say that the printing on yours is the smallest and neatest I've seen yet, Chris...

would these signatures be from the person who built the bass before it a was finished (sprayed)?

I found something gnarly and scatological in my cavity. Is this normal?

There is an MM in the bass and volume/tone router, a S.W. Heter 7/82 in the treble area, and a Zaua in the volume/tone area with 82 7 7-14 marked.

After reading this thread I decided to open up my 4003 to see what's written in it. I must say I'm really disappointed. All I could find was a boring piece of black marker graffiti and 22 written in the control cavity, there's nothing in the PU cavities. Should I send it back to Ric so they can write something more interesting in my bass?

Jeff- that's a cool thing to find in there!
Sven- absolutely- or just write something in there of your own for future generations to find!

Jeff--I've written to you four times using the e-mail address in your profile. Apparently nothing's getting through, and nothing's getting bounced back, either.
Could you please e-mail me instead? My address is on my profile page.
Thanks.
