The bass in the auction is really an older Cheyenne model, not a Cii as it says it is!

And yes it is a C 1 not a C 2

I've long been curious about how these compare to the 4000 series basses that I'm familiar with. How does their tone compare? Had a chance to pick one up for about $900 a year or so ago. What do these tend to go for, assuming the one listed above is over-priced?

From discussions with some of our U.K. friends here, RICs are way over-priced. I wouldn't be surprized if this sold for as much as $2000 (U.S.). Tim, I believe $900 would have been a fair price. I have seen a new Cii (4 string) and the price was $1495.

The 4004 has a different tone and feel than the 4001/4003 ... part of it is the body ... it is a little lighter and thinner ... also a walnut body, maple of bubinga fret board material, and a different bridge ... these all contribute to a different sound ... even though it is neck through it has a little less sustain than a 4003 ... then there are the pickups ... humbuckers ... these are an interesting design ... as far as I can tell they have a single coil of wires, but the magnet is sideways with two rails ... one north and one south ... this is what cancels the hum ... the pickups are about 13k ohms ... this is kinda hot ... the nack profile is different ... more tapered from nut to body than a 4003 ...
overall it has a sort of p-bass growl ... it doesn't have the same treble bite of the old 60's and 70's 4001's ... but it is interesting when my friend (who is a 4001 owner) played it he said it had a Chris Squire sound ...
My main bass is a 1990 4003s5 ... but I am glad I own a 4004L ...
So if you want to own more than one Ric ... get a 4003/4001 first ... but get a 4004 as well ...

I have seen several 4004's on ebay ... can't remember if any of them were c2 models ...
I'd like to get a 4004cii natural with walnut headwings ... and of course .. convert it to a 5 string

Jeff, I think we established here awhile ago that all the production 4004/650 humbuckers are conventional dual-coil humbuckers with samarium-cobalt magnets below. Somebody had seen an early one that was different but JH said that was a prototype only.
Tim, a few months ago there were two on eBay that were in the US, one went for about $1150, the other topped $1300. But IMO that's unusual. $950-$1000 ought to be about right.

Dan has a strong point regarding Ricks being overpriced out of USA. But at least they are available in UK.
We don't even have a RIC dealer in my country and a beatup scratched and dinged '80's 4003 AG (the only one available locally) goes for---ready for this?---the equivalent of $2571 USD.
If I want a new 4004 cii real bad, I'd have to spend $628 USD on air tickets and take a 2-hour flight to Japan and shell out
$1645 USD for one if there's one for sale there. To have them ship it to me, I'd have to pay around $600 USD for shipping and custom tax.
I envy you, my lucky American friends!

you should grab that Azureglo, that is a rare color, especially for a 4003, I've never heard of one, even here. To me a bass is worth what I am willing to pay for it, if that makes sense, if I want one bad enough I'll shell out the bucks. Of course that is probably what drives up the prices.
The best sounding and one of the best playing basses I have is a beat up scratched 1996 4003 Jetglo, but then again, I stole it for about 600.00 including new treble pickup I had to buy. It lead a rough life but has a great neck, almost like the late 70's 4001's.

I normally like quilted maple, but it looks odd to me on a Rick. Think I prefer the dark brown color of the older Cheyenne's.
What do you suppose this will fetch?

Ya know guys....if ya really wanna win an auction AND pay the lowest price possible, you place your high bid during the last minute(I prefer the last 15 seconds) of an auction. It keeps your bid from going higher because of all the people who bid for a week before an auction closes. If you look at auctions you've lost, you'll probably see it was won by someone who bid only once and at the last minute....kinda like a real auction huh?
