I'm going in a little while to check out a 1 year old never gigged Ampeg SVT 450 and a Ampeg half cabinet 4-10's. The guy said its the cabinet rated at 500 watts. He paid around 1500 to 1600 and has it advertised at 1100.00 or best offer. I asked him on the phone what his best cash price would be and he said maybe $850.00. Whos using this setup and what do you think? Crazy to pass it up? Its either something like this and a cheap bass or get a nice RIC bass.

I'm gonna jump right in, if it's a choice that prevents you from obtaining a Ric bass, PASS. There are any number of small, relatively inexpensive amps you could get to play the Ric through, and the SVT450 is a solid state amp anyway. Just my thoughts, but the Ric is ultimately more important than an amplifier of any brand

One of the first things I l earned on this forum, there are a about a half dozen or so guys on here, well maybe a dozen depending on the subject, who's advice is second to none. Jeffrey is one of those. If he says get the Rick, then..............
Now this does not mean I say follow everything these folks say, but odds are you'll be way ahead of where you would be without it!
My convoluted way of thanking the "elders"!

There will always be good deals on amps and Ampegs are everywhere so get the Ric first (IMO). The Ric will sound good through just about any amp and a cheap bass might always sound like **** no matter what you run it though.
(I'm not saying that some cheap basses aren't a great value BTW)

I guess I'm in the "get the Rick" crowd. It's a decent rig the guy's offering and all, but I wouldn't say it's worth passing up a Rick for, as long as you already have an amp of some kind.

Try this exercise. Go on Craigslist and search Ampeg. Then search Rickenbacker.
Any further questions?
My work is done here.

The SVT450 is a solid state head, as was stated, and does not really fulfill the Ampeg heritage sound. My convoluted way of agreeing with Brian and Jeff.

I still have instruments I bought 30 years ago. They are now worth quite a bit more than I paid for them. The amps I bought 30 years ago are probably in a landfill. Thus, I would always prefer a quality instrument.
Of course, post this on an Ampeg board and see what response you get. But I got sick of my SVT3Pro crapping out on me and I just bought a Peavey head, so this isn't the best time to ask me about Ampeg.

I own two Ampegs. Like 'em both a lot. But if you gotta pick between one or the other then the choice is clear. Get the Rick. My Ricks sound very good through my cheap amp. Not as good as through the Ampegs, but good nonetheless.
Amps come and go, but a nice Rick could be with you for a lifetime.
