the metal piece that holds on to both truss rods going into the 4001. It is a squae metal piece with 2 holes for the rods to go through.

My 74 came and the ends of the rods are in REALLY bad shape. the metal piece is almost in 2...

Holy schnikees this thing has had a hard life...there is a split from the tip of the headstock to just past the nut on the treble side where someone was really cranking down on these rods!!!!

Jaymi, don't do that! The '74ers are really good players. Get it fixed otherwise you might regret it later?

Already sent back. You are right, they are excellent players but after all was said and done, it was going to need frets and reglue the headstock split on the laminates, a new back p/up and of course, the trussrods had to be dealt with. It was more than I wanted to deal with-especially since I could get another bass for less money w/no issues...

...only if it is the latest version. I just sold my "old" 1997 4003FG, as I did not have any use for it any more. My '74 4001 RULES!!! Soundwise and from the playability there are so HUGE differences!

Jeff, that's my thought. I just came across a white/BT 4003 that I can get for a good price so we will see if the deal goes through.
Peter, I have had a number of 74s and they are excellent, this one just needed so much that I was pretty disappointed about it when I first plugged it in.
