I wonder how it took for them to get to play as tightly as they did. But by far the most soulfull performance of Lennon ever.

I love the banter at the beginning..."I wanna hold yer....man" and Jagger just goes "huh". Lol!

Love that performance. It's featured on my iPod often.

Sorry, I was never much impressed with this clip. A screaming Lennon trying to do the blues just doesn't work for me. Or for him either.

Mark,

You have a point IMO.

I've heard garage and house bands with far less talent jam and play the blues oh so much better. I am also not a fan of this clip.

Sad to say because, I am a huge fan of both John Lennon and Eric Clapton (as some of you may know).

I like this clip, and I think the band does a pretty good job--Clapton and Lennon play well together....but.....

I watch the whole thing and after I see The Who do their bit I can't help but put the Dirty Mac in second place. I think Lennon was, and he said himself, a recording artist--he made great records, part of the wonder of seeing him live was the fact that it was HIM. The Who rule the stage, especially in '68. The Beatles had it in the Cavern, and in Hamburg, but in my estimation, after that they cared more about making great records that doing something magical at a show.

I don't think either group is better, just different....

Well, it is after all an impromptu jam session. Despite their iconic reputations, it is still just four musicians thrown together and whipping out a tune as if they were an established band. They aren't familiar with each other on a live basis, have no sense of each others' nuances, don't have a "group" mentality honed over months and years. For all that, it's still pretty good, wouldn't you say?

It's plain groovy seeing Keef playing bass, and 3rd fiddle.

Ain't the best of performances, but hey, it's Lennon, whilst a Beatle, playing a Beatle song with some pretty groovy non-Beatles.

I agree , Mark. I always liked this one.

A couple comments.
It's the Blues, Man! It's not supposed to be polished.
I always thought Keef was the best bass player in the Stones.
I wish Eric would have never picked up a Strat!

I remember reading an interview with Bill Wyman (or maybe it was even his autobiography) where he said that he felt he was hard done by, with Keith playing bass in the Dirty Mac and not him. There were already two guitarists (Clapton and Lennon) and Keith didn't want to miss out so he pulled rank.

This is why Lennon was great - his presence and power alone shows why The Beatles went where they did. And Clapton's effortless playing - as if playing in his sleep - Incredible...

"as if playing in his sleep"

Exactly! That statement underscores my earlier point. Image
