Found this one in the guitar (not bass) section of ebay:

It would be a nice match to my Deluxe Hofner. Hmm . . . .

I saw that it would make a real nice 5 string ...

wonder if he has the original pickups?....I really wish they'd bring back the black hardware option.

Jeff, have you ever seen a RIC 4-string that wouldn't make a nice 5-string?! ;-)

Well, I won the bidding on the black-trimmed MG on ebay. Now I just have to tell the wife. Hey Jeff Rath: can you get black tuners to make this a five-string?

I intensly dislike the black hardware on my '82. That one never leaves the case.

Yep I would never convert my 1968 4001 into a 5 string ...

Paul ... you can get the tuners from Mike Parks ... about $17 if I remember correctly ...

Jerry ... If you don't like the black hardware then sell it and buy one with the chrome hardware ...

I've also noticed a running "theme" in Jeff's thoughts...hmmm....

actually I would never convert a pre 1980 Ric ... but all the rest are fair game ... so little time ... so many basses ...

Jeff said "actually I would never convert a pre 1980 Ric ".
Hey Jeff, is that only because you don't think the neck could take the tension, and / or decrease the value of it?

Got it today. Seller was a Fender man and thought he would try this Rick. Decided to remain a Fender man. It's 2002 4003 in factory mint condition, just beautiful!!! It'll join my '72 4001 MG, '93 Cheyenne, the Hofner Deluxe, and the all-black fretless I pick up Sunday.

Photos to come (I hope)!

joey:

I wouldn't convert a pre 1980 bass because I don't like adjusting the truss rods on old rics ...

Jeff: Yes, they can be a pain enough to adjust with 4 strings on them. Fortunately I haven't had to adjust my '79 in over twenty years and the '73 I got earlier this year setup quite well with little adjustment to the neck.
