I'm wondering how many here own one of these, having recently become an owner myself. It will still be a week or more before I have her in my hands, but I also wonder what the fretboard material used was? The one I bought almost looks maple from the pics, although that may be due to the lighting.

I already have a black on jetglo 4003S/5, so I know I'll like the look on the shadow with the checker binding, and the lighter fretboard. I also like the vintage knobs.

I emailed Mr. Hall asking him if the fingerboard wood was "Padouk/Paduak" and his reply was "rosewood". Well, I can only say the rosewood material of my Shadow has very different woodgrain pattern from those of my '72 and '98. Its got lots of finer, straighter, insect foot like woodgrains. The fingerboard lacquer is the thinnest among my 3 Ricks. The neck is narrower than the other 2 which are identical.



Acoustically, she's louder and more open sounding than my '98. That guarantees nicely defined amplified sounds.
I'd love to have another Shadow, hands down.

I'm happy with mine, it's my main gigging bass now.

Well, the Shadow arrived, and overall it seems okay, but there are some areas that didin't show in the ebay pics (big surprise). The fretboard looks identical in color to Brian's. The pickup surround is in rough shape with some of the finish gone, and a bit of rust. Not sure what could be done about that one. The usual corner chips and abrasions, but no buckle rash.

It also has chrome saddles which I though was a little odd. The bridge looks normal otherwise.

The strings are dead, so I can't say how good she sounds yet, but the action is pretty good. I also didn't realize these had vintage strap pins.

Hey Jeff and club members-Glad you got your bass. What strings are you thinking about putting on? I'm going to try some flats in the next few days just because I have never tried them before. Not worried about tension or fretwear I just think they might sound interesting. TI Jazz?

I will probably go with DRs. They seem to last the longest around here, and have a nice stringy sound. It is so long since I bought bass strings, I'd have to look up what I used last time. I'm pretty sure they were stainless.

seeing that DRs have a black round-wound stainless string set now.

I saw them @ a g'tar shop in Los Angeles,-but was stupid enough not to buy 'em.

There was no bass strung up with them beauties-but they looked soooooo cool.

I like DR's but was told that SIT actually makes those 'handmade' strings.

Go figure

Hey Jeff, try the DR Low Riders Stainless 45 - 105. Have them on all my basses - love them! and so do the Ricks - very Rick friendly strings!
