I keep seeing people refer to the 'Gumby' headstock when they're talking about the modern RIC guitar headstock. I always thought the gumby was the nickname for the gumby-looking headstock from the late '70s - roundish & gumbyesque vs. the modern one with nice curves and dimensions?
What's a gumby?

I thought the gumby headstock was the early 70's bound headstock?

"But I thought it was fatter?"
No its quite skinny. So is that fat one that I thought was Gumby called the Phat Elvis? It needs a name...

Ahh! That's the fatty I was originally thinking about, except unbound...
Was it late '70's too? Or just early '70s with the grovers?

I knew Gumby, and let me tell you Rick, you're no Gumby!

Well, you can go back to 1960 if you wanted to with the paddle-shape on the pegheads, they seemed to be abundant on many guitars in 1963 as well. But the 24-fret 360 in the above pic was from the era I originally posted the 'Gumby' reference to, yes....both bound and unbound.
These guitars had the Grover Rotomatic tuners and I suppose that was the main reason as to the having the bigger peghead. Guitars with Van Ghents face the same need for a larger mounting surface, but they didn't always get it.
