Rickenbacker 4001 Screw/Tuners

Hey everyone,
I've got a 1980 Rick 4001, but I'm missing a screw on the back of one of the tuners. It's one of the screws that hold the little gears on.. right now its being held on by tension I guess, but I really feel like I need to replace the screw. I've had no luck with hardware stores (even big ones like Home Depot), I can't find a perfect match. Does anyone know where I can get a screw to fit, or if not, any information on replacing the whole set of tuners (with vintage or new, doesnt matter to me). Below is a link of the back of my headstock so you can see whats missing, and a picture of one of the other screws I took out to show what the piece I need looks like. Thanks for your help!

you can surely get screws and washers like that at any hardware store. i probably have like 10 in my "odd screw box " lol

Welcome, John. I had the same screw missing from one of the tuners on my '77 4001 when it arrived from e-bayland. I unscrewed another one and took it to my local Ace Hardware, where I was told that it is a thread normally used in automobile manufacturing. They had one (brass, unfortunately) but inch and a half was the shortest, so I had to cut it down.

Don't companies like Schaller and Kluson have "customer support" sites for just such situations?
And if they don't... why the h**l not?!?!?

Hi John,
Are your tuners reverse turning on that? (clockwise for the E and A strings) I have 78 and 79 4001's with reverse tuners on them, I wouldn't get rid of them if they are. (or sell them to me, haha)

I'm not at home right now, but if memory serves me correctly, I think I have an extra screw from a tuner I can let you have. Won't know until tomorrow, I'll let you know then (if you still need it, that is).

I've always wished that guitars and basses were made with screws that could be found at a hardware store.

I found those same screws at OSH but they had to be nickle plated to match. The washers were another matter. Nothing matched until I looked through the hardware drawers at the dealership I work in. I found a slightly larger washer but it had that same small hole so I nickle plated four of them so they'd match. My 3001 arrived from e-Bay land without a screw and washer too. You'll probably be inundated with screws and washers now but if none of them are right, e-Mail me and I'll send you some extras of mine.

owen: this is my last resort *after* trying all available hw stores..
lindsay: i was actually able to find one that would fit the threads, but it was also too long, the wrong type of metal, and had a flat head.. i guess it would hold it on, though
bob: yep, reverse.. which i guess means i should tough it out and try to fix it rather than get new ones, eh?
