Newbie with '74 4001 question...

hey guys, first timer here!
well i have the chance to get a wonderful 1974 jetglo (black) 4001 bass with original case, locally.
i've never seen a jetglo 4001 from that year... is there any inventory to know how many were made in each color?

ps: man i'd love to join the ricky family. i had a 3001 some years ago, but that one's gone (sorry i thought it was ugly. not so the 4001!!!)

Hello Patrick,
There really aren't any dependable production numbers released to the public at this time. It appears that bass production was booming in the mid 1970s, and as Jetglo is probably the second-most popular color (second to Fireglo, I suspect), there are likely a lot of them out there. Hi Patrick, Welcome! I have no idea how many were made - but that is a popular color. I have a '74 MapleGlo (I am the orig owner) and it is my fave up to this day. personally I'd say go for it. but I am partial to the 4001's. Good luck with it and again welcome to the forum.

dunno if i'm allowed to ask this here, but what's more or less a decent price for it? it's in nice shape, but has the horseshoe cover removed (the pickup underneath is white!) and comes with original hardcase.

Welcome to the Forum, depending on condition I'd say the price could range from $1500 to as much as maybe $2300, US. Your profile shows you in Mexico, not sure how many Rics are there but I'd suspect there are not high numbers.

i just wouln't want to overpay on something... i mean, i use the stuff to PLAY not to collect, but it's good to know that there would be a good resale market if i ever wanted to part with it.
ricks are quite rare here, i've seen some (great) 70s copies for cheap, gotta give those a shot too, someday.
the '74 is around $1300, so lemme see what i sell to get that one.

a 70s ric is a good gigging bass ...
70s rics sound great ... I like to wire them up with all 250k ohm pots and remove the .0047 bass cut capacitor and put in a neck toaster ...

Pat, I have seen the '74s going for anywhere between $1300 to around $1800. All depends on condition and as noted 'what it's worth to you'.
I too have done the cap bypass. I'm not sure what pots are on there (they came with the bass) but the pick ups are hotter than my 2000 4003s5 's are. Seems that the 74 edition has some mix and match type things going on - a transition year.
Don't forget this is the old truss rod system - you need to pre-bend the neck before tightening the rods. Good luck with the purchase. If all goes well - pictures please?
