I wonder if this is from the time he didn't have the right to perform his own songs?

But he did "Bad Moon Rising"--or didn't he write that one? (I thought he did.)

Probably why he was playing at a HS reunion for peanuts - hard to trace/prove (except now for this video). Just a guess though....

It it was the latter 80s, which it was by some reports, it was likely resolved by then. Also, it's hard to imagine he would have charged to play a high school gig. If he had no revenue stream for the gig, it might be hard to sue him for playing songs he wrote (i.e. for free.) Maybe he was friends with everyone in high school and thus no one would tell.
