Back Of Neck Finish

What causes the finish on the back of guitar necks to wear off? I see some guitars with the finish totally worn off from time to time. None of my guitars show any signs of wear, and I play them a lot. It's got to be associated with oils or acids in the skin or maybe the texture of the skin that causes premature neck wear.
