Will the 4002 XLR output work without the original pickups? I only recently got around to trying it and there's no sound. I have non-original HB1's or something.

I thought that the XLR jack had it's own tap and wire leads off the original pick up coils. Without the original p.u.'s the XLR jack cannot work the way that it was intended.
I was never to clear as to how the original 4002 was wired to the XLR.
Perhaps Mr. Hall could elaborate if he has the time.

HB1's are humbucking pickups with two sets of leads. You could wire one set of leads to the tone controls and the other to the XLR jack or you could jump the leads where they are wired to the tone section directly to the XLR jack if you wanted to keep the humbucking feature. I would prefer the second solution.

Thanks, fellas! So, Dave, your XLR is silent too? Yes it would be great if Mr. H-dog would chime in. I'm about this close (insert pinching gesture) to selling the 4002. Seriously.

Wow! The bass pickup doesn't even go to the XLR. No wonder the ebay pu's are two treble ones!

A 4002 bass pickup can be used in the neck position. You would just use only one set of leads.

The 4002 treble pickup is bifilar wound, essentially a second coil wound along with the first. The hi-Z coil connects to the traditional circuit assembly, while the lo-Z winding connects only to the XLR jack.
The DI connection at the XLR, therefore, is not affected in any way by the hi-Z coils or any of the controls on the bass.
The bass pickup assembly is just a standard, single-wound coil.
To answer the question, unless the instrument has some kind of multi-coil pickup (or a separate pickup) appropriately wired to the XLR, it just isn't going to happen!
