We recently sold our house and have moved to a different suburb. I arranged to set up a new phone number etc and was told that the broadband connection would take about a week to organise. Two weeks and several phone calls later I am now advised that there are no DSL ports available at the local exchange and there are no plans to install any. Call back in two months they said !!!

Going back to dial up after using broadband is seeing me tear out whats left of my hair. But the annoying part is that the Telstra can't afford to upgrade its network, but can pay its managers mega millions a year.

Very frustrating.

You could always see if a neighbor is dumb enough to have an open wireless connection.... at least for the few months they said to wait.

Do you get cable TV in your new area? Most cable providers also have on-line service, and it's usually faster than DSL. I have Roadrunner (part of Time Warner) here in Weeesconsin, and it's wonderful!

Gary: Mud Island, The Fort, the Chinaman's Hat and the Pope's Eye are all features of Port Phillip Bay here in Victoria. Shane's previous residence was very close to it - if not right on the edge of it!

Of course I could have added the South Channel Light, Swan Island, Arthur's Seat, Tootgarook, Red Hill, The Old Boiler, Mount Martha, The Rip, the Quarantine Station, etc.......... Image

Verizon in Maryland offers 30mb/s with direct fiber optic line to the home. They market it as "Fios" and it is half the price of cable and 6 to 15 times the speed of cable.

I'd be thinking that satellite TV would be the only option in Shane's area, Paul.

BTW...... here's the Chinaman's Hat. Image

Speaking Of Chinamans hat, are there any sailors on this board who happened to visit Hong Kong in the seventies? I have the hat of the lady (Suzie or Rosie or some such) that had a crew that painted the sides of Navy ships from sanpans while we were anchored there. The payment was given in brass, and I traded her some brass for her hat! It's even got a couple of splotches of Navy gray on it!!!!!

It hasn't been used as that for a loooong time, Kris. Not such as bad place and it doesn't stink to high heaven like the Chinaman's Hat does!! Image
