I also noticed your woes in the "The folly of finding an old Fender" thread in finding a real vintage 1970-1974 Fender P or J bass that is really all-original and has not been either forged or hacked with replacement bits along the way. I have a few all-original ones from that timeframe (much easier on the back than the late-70s ones), and found during my search that folks are just willing to try to sell you any old kind of crud and claim it is all-original. The worst part is neck-swapping. Fender numbers its necks and the backplate, and it is hard to find matching numbers anymore that aren't forgeries. But the neck S/N is only a decal. At least Gibson burns theirs in with a stamp into the wood of the headstock itself.

I'd love to find a 1975 Jazz myself!

I just gave up and figured I'd settle for a RI 62 or 75. Too many copies and decal switching for my liking!

Yeah, this whole Fender thing has got me pretty bummed. It sure isn't like buying Ricks! If something's off, we know it right away. Very little second guessing involved. I'll be posting some replies in that thread.

Elys, FYI, I've sent you several emails with no reply.

Now this is weird!! I know that your work email addy has problems, Trotty, so I send to your home address. I have email from Dave on that subject,by the way, and I am definitely a "go" on the subject. The only issue at this end is that it will be awhile before I can go visit Dave, so if you can be patient then it becomes a "done deal" for certain.

Jim, I did receive just one email from you, way back on January 25th, regarding Chris Squire and Steve Howe, and we both share the same fascination with these guys' work. I replied to that effect, in awe of your thorough knowledge of their history. And thanks for the encouragement, I did get that 21-fretter, named her Susanna, and brought her to MARF with me April 25th in New Jersey. Paul Boyer got some good shots of her for his book. She is truly a 10 out of 10 example of a case-queen January 1970 4001 21-fretter indeed, a twin to Sergio Silva's 21-fretter Jaclyn down to the shade of FG

Except recently - mine has never had a crushing blow dealt to its poor toaster and pickguard Poor Jaclyn, I hope she is back to glowing health once again....
