So I saw Genesis live today

And I'd thought I'd give you guys a report on how it was.

First of all, those who expected a "Phil Collins show with Genesis as a backing group" will be greatly dissappointed, they played a lot of the Gabriel material and all in it's entirety, songs like "In the cage", "Ripples", "I know what I like" and "Carpet crawlers" but also stuff like "Domino", "In that quet earth", "After glow" and "Los endos" were being played in the full versions.

Of course the hits were there but they weren't taking up the amount of space in the setlist that many people feared they would take. Afterwards somebody told me that he was dissappointed that they didn't play stuff like "Abacap" and "Jesus he knows me"

As for the performance itself. It was stellar, the band clearly were enjoying themselves and Collins' vocals were at his best. (although I did notice that the pitch of some tunes had been lowered in order for him to reach the high notes) One of the musical highlights was when they played "Follow you follow me" on which Collins both sang and played drums. (Something he doesn't do often since he finds drumming and singing at the same time rather difficult)

Speaking of drumming, the drumduet between Collins and Chester Thompson was really cool since they started it off by whacking on a drumchair before moving to their kits.

As for the axes used.

Mike Rutherford used his new Yamaha Custom shop double neck, a black Yamaha TRB4 four string bass and three Fender American standard series stratocasters, a black one, a silver one and a metallic red one.

Daryl Steurmer used a sunburst Lakland bass, a red Fender Eric Clapton stratocaster and a Godin LG hybrid guitar.

All in all it was a very memorable show, really your money's worth.

Wow. That sounds like they were reading my mind when they were figuring out their set list. Thanks for the review.

I am glad to see them going back into their earlier catalog, but for me it is not the same without Hackett, let alone Gabriel.

I saw Genesis four times with Peter and the other three times after those shows still had Steve with them.

The reason why Peter Gabriel was not part of it was because he already has booked a tour of 2007 and 2008 prior to the others letting it be known that there would be a Genesis tour. But he did state that he would love to do "the lamb lies down on broadway" with them so who knows, maybe in 2009.

As for Hackett, he already expressed that he won't take part in any reunion, so we're stuck with Daryl Steurmer.

Genesis was one of the best shows I had ever seen back in the early 80's. I am looking forward to seeing them in Sept. And on a related note, I picked up the remastered "Trick of the Tail" CD/DVD set last week, and the sound on it is really, really good.

That is refreshingly surprising! I never thought they'd do that old stuff.

Hmm, that's not what Steve told me last October.

I was quoting what Mike Rutherford was saying on the Reunion press conference when asked why Steve Hackett was not a part of it. He said "We asked Steve but he told us that he currently has no interrest in doing a tour with us."

When we discussed it, Steve said that they were going to have a meeting about doing a reunion and he would hope that it would be a possibility.

I can only surmise that when the set list came up during those meetings, that is when he lost interest.

You think they wanted to do Wot Gorilla?

Wot's wrong with Wot Gorilla? Great drumming and a refreshingly restrained vocal track...

I remember reading that Steve was upset with the guys putting silly stuff like that on W&W when he had songs much more imaginative getting cut from that album. Just look at the writer credits. It's a Banks-fest. Which, of course, is cool with me. He's my favorite when it comes to their compositions.

Genesis' brain went out the door when Gabriel left...likewise it's heart with the departure of Hackett.

That left, oh let's see...a pancreas, a spleen and whatever body part you'd like to assign to Collins...

I don't think that's true. You can only play demolished augmented 13th chords on tempermental keyboards for so long.

I must admit, Jdog, it's hard to argue with that...
