According to the folks at hipshot they recommend the Schaller M4 bass extender. Here is the FAQ
http://www.hipshotproducts.com/listfaqs.php?faqcatid=66. I personally think it would look funny. I guess you could get a 4004 and add one but then you have to deal with the wide neck. This is the biggest reason my Sterling gets all of my stage time

M4 is the one. It's not THAT noticeable on my 4003S with the chrome hardware. It will be a bit more obvious with the old nickel hardware.

Is that a closed-back Grover? I have one and I'm tired of trying to collect all four.
Not enough box tops...

I have a Hip Shot D-Tuner on my 1975. Just make sure you get the new style M4 D-Tuner (which you would if you were to buy it new) because the one the issued in the late 80's/early 90's had a bigger base and when engaged it hit the A string post. The newer one with the smaller base does not. I have replaced the older style on my '75 and even put one on my '78. Yes on close inspection the tuners look different (and tune in opposite directions) but if you need a quick low D than it will work nice.
