Does any know what case Rickenbacker used after they stopped using silver colored cases around 1968.

I believe they went to an all black case.

I understand they are black on the outside finish. My question is, what are the inside differences in order of production. The reason I ask is, a guitar dealer friend has a boatload of empty cases he wants to get ride of. Some I believe are for Rickenbackers but I cannot tell if they are Rickenbacker or Fender black cases nor can I tell what period basses they go with. I want to put them up on eBay and could use some help here.

to the best of my knowledge, the black cases are all fitted, that is, you should see the outline of a 4001/4003. that should tip you off. i'd do a glass slipper test and try to fit a Ric in the suspect cases.

One like this.

They are like the Fender period case and are not form fitted for the Ric bass.

Thanks for the help Wints. There are two like the ones pictured with orange lining. One has a slight difference in the brace where the neck headstock falls. One is like yours, which has one side open, and the other has a cutout to fit the neck but has walls on both sides. There is also one with blue liner with no body form and a body formed inside in blue. I had a 1970 bass that came in a black case but I can’t remember the inside as I used a flight case for it.

I would be willing to bet that the same manufacturer made both Fender and Rickenbacker as they have the same latches, same type of tolex, same type of stitching etc. Very similar especially on the outside except that the Fender cases were not fitted as are the ric cases.

I remember I had one of those black bases. It had a metal plaque that read rickenbacker, exactly like on the silver cases.

I have a case, black on the outside and blue on the inside with a cutout for the bottom of a Ric bass, or at least it fits perfect. The case itself is about 2 inches shorter than your average black Ric case but there is room for a bass about 1/2" longer, does this sound familiar to anyone? I don't remember which Ric bass it came with that I bought.

I agrree, I would bet on G&G making OEM cases for a lot of manufacturers.
