That's a great video... excellent close up of the Ric. And Dick Clark's asking Jack Cassidy about Hippies taking a job for $100,000 and putting on a suit and tie was classic !!

FYI, that's Jack CASADY, Not Cassidy.
Jack Cassidy was Partridge Familys' David Cassidys' dad.

I noticed that too Rich. Especially when Grace said "Marty Balin on piano." Like he was a backup musician or something. That must of really irked him. (Like the closeup of Grace during the entire length of "Today" in the Monterey Pop film even though he is singing lead.)
This was his freakin' band!
He must have seen it crashing down already.

As far as Jack needing the money. May of '67 was just when their fame was starting. I don't know if they realized yet what was happening or how much money they were going to make.

Just as a backdrop, Jorma enticed Jack to come out to California with manager Matthew Katz's promise of fifty dollars a week pay.

Mark --- that's a good observation about Marty Balin getting edged out of the limelight.... I noticed that same thing on the Monterey Pop film. The cameramen often don't really know who the lead singer is on a song, or if its a duet, (as in the case of "Today") and many cameramen are infamous for failing to capture the guitar soloist during the solo and they often have their camera fixed on the wrong guitarist.... or focus on the drummer during a guitar solo, etc.

In the case of these Airplane clips, I did not mind at all that the close ups were on Paul's cool Ric rather than Jorma's Gibson.... although by the second song on American Bandstand (Somebody to Love) the cameramen had figured out that Jorma was doing the guitar solos.

You are correct that the Airplane was Marty's band to start with and he was dominant on their first album as a singer and songwriter. And once fame hit them, the looks of Grace Slick caught the eye of the press and Marty slowly faded into the background.... it must have been personally painful for him. And as we saw, if Grace wasn't getting all the questions thrown at her, interviewers like Dick Clark would ask Jack to be a spokesman for the entire Hipppie generation !

All these years later, I wonder if Jack is still salaried at $50 per week for Hot Tuna with Jorma ??
