Okay, I admit I'm uneducated on these things...I'm a guitarist that is looking for a Ric bass. So don't dis me too much! What exactly is the difference between a 4001v63 and a 4003, apart from the triangular position markers and body binding? Oh yeah, the horseshoe pickup on the 4001v63. What else? Why is the 4001v63 so much more expensive?

You've pretty much covered it. The V63 also has a modern version of the classic "toaster top" pickup in the 1/2" position, vs. the high-gain in the 1" position on the standard 4003. Also, the V63 does not have the deluxe "Ric-O-Sound" outlet for splitting bass and treble pickups to two amps (or two channels). V63 and current C64 are considered "vintage" reissues, even though they are structurally modern. To each his own. I have both.

"Why is the 4001v63 so much more expensive?"

I think some of that is the fact that they're no longer being made.

for my money a 4003 will play and sound better ... the v63s are over priced because they are no longer made ... most of the v63 basses that I have played needed fret dressing because there is no binding on the neck ... and I'll take a high gain over a horseshoe any day ...
