Sorry if this has already been posted, but it's got two 12 string Ricks in it and it's when I first took notice of these great guitars.

The classic dual Rick 12 song.

Is the other guitarist (the guy who does the lead lick) using a bit of distortion, besides a heavily compressed sound? It sounds like he's playing a bit dirty. I like it. Very tastefully done.

The lead guitar definitely has some sort of distortion going on.

I was fortunate to find the TP&TH DVD that has The Waiting (and a number of others) on it at Sam's Club a couple of years back.

This is probably the Petty song I would most like to play well. I’ve spent a little time on it but not much at all.
I realize of course that this is a lip-synched and “air guitar’ed” video but Petty’s left hand positions didn’t look very much at all like I remember from the songbook.

First of all – the G – F# - A – D walk-down intro (I’m not saying those are the exact notes or chords. I’m just using that as a shorthand for the intro.) Is that played by Mike on six strings or Tom on 12? (I just assumed it was Tom.) *

And I had always thought it was a sort of “boom-chick” kind of thing – hit the bass note and then strum the higher strings. But it looked like Tom was just strumming single down strokes on the intro and verse.

- - - - - - - - - - -

* Another example. I play the intro to American Girl (on 12) as:

---10---
--mute--
----7---
--------
--------
--------

Yet in concert footage, I see it is Mike who plays the intro on a (six-string) Telecaster and he is playing a different shape.

Other than the rhythm guitar, it's probably not Rics. Tom's part certainly is.

Mike probably used his 625/12 (#3 ever!) just for the video.

I think I'm starting to be a Tom Petty fan. Every time I watch a clip, I think to myself, "Here's a rocker who really can put a song across." He's pretty good, all right.

On further reflection, this could be the theme song for all of us waiting for our new Rics. Yeah, "The wai-ai-ting is the hardest part...." Image
