I have a USA F*nder Jazz that I'm considering trading for a USA Gibson SG reissue bass. I haven't ever tried a Gibson bass. I know that the SG is a short scale.
I'm not that impressed with the Jazz. I LOVE the neck but that's about it. Anyone tried a Gibson SG bass??

C H A R L Y ! ! !
One thing I can say is you have to like a darker muddier bass tone. Not judging, just saying.

I'm picking up my 72 tomorrow!!!! It doesn't have chromes on it yet, stil rounds. It is what I played back in the day....... The EB3 is more versatile but you can now only get that under the Epiphone brand , and it is long scale. I will be playing it through the SVT on Sunday, and just may use it for the service. I don't remember "mud" per say, I remember "round". At home I have the Portabass 250 going to a 1x15 so that may sound muddy. The SVT goes through a 4x10 which moves more air and has more punch. Heck I may even have had tapewounds on it back in the day, but I have CRS disease. I loved the sound I had. I had a SUNN 100 watt tube amp, a Plush 2x15 cab(tuck n roll), an EBO and a P. The P had tapes for sure. I didn't use the foam (not with the tapes, but with metal strings) like most did, which gave me a bit more sustain..........ya think? {:^) When you look at old videos, you'll see a piece of foam crammed under the strings just in front of the bridge.
It has been 30 + years since I have played one so.........

EB3
Wait, the SG has both PUPS?
I just linked Jeff and it had the EB3 pups!
So the SG is really an EB3 not an EBO.............
D'oh!

I have played the SG RI and I loved the back pickup with just a bit of the neck pickup best. By itself the neck PU is a bit woofy. The neck was very nice but just a bit too narrow for me.

the long scales were much better looking, IMO.

I should mention the long scale is only two inches longer in total length. They moved the bridge and lengthened the neck a bit at each end to get the ~3.5 inch diff in scale.

It's not really an EB-3 either, it doesn't have the 4 position selector switch with earthquake position #1. I like mine, it sounds great with both pickups on in position #3. Mine is a 1969-70 Gibson EB-3, they have very fast necks especially if you have small hands. I like them.

Didn't plug it in, and admittedly this is very little input to this thread, but when i was picking up my upright I played an SG reish for a minute and was IN LOVE with the neck. If I didn't go to Alto with a singleminded purpose... it would have come home with me.

My fist "nice" bass was a 1970ish EB3 as Jack Bruce was my hero at the time. I paired it with first a Fender Bassman, (not enough low end) and eventually the Ampeg V4B (with the folded 15" refrigerator cabinet). I loved that bass, short scale, light, and fast neck. It suffered an unfortunate accident (neck crack). I wish I had it to this day.

I had an Epi EB-0 that was a dog (sounded neat with the right strings on it), but I played a 71 Gibson EB-2L that was really sweet. I also played a brand new SG bass that was okay, but I still like my 77 4001 better

I had a Gibson eb0 from about 1970 ... with only one pickup that bass was pretty much a one dimensional bass ... get the 2 pickup bass ...

Yeah, I agree, you need the bridge pickup or they are complete mud. I've never heard of an EB-2L, did you mean an EB-3L or did that escape my notice?
