I ordered a new nut from Rickenbacker for my 4003

I'm removing material from the underside, so I don’t mess up the slots. However, I’m a little nervous about removing the factory nut and installing the new one. From what I’ve read, I place some wood against the nut, tap it gently, and it comes off? I then use some wood glue to reattach the new one? Right?

That's it. One nice, sharp tap does the job. Use just a dab of white or yellow glue to re-ttach it and wait a half-hour before restringing.
When I re-string, I do both "E" strings first to equalize the stress and avoid popping the nut. Then fill in the inner strings and tune to pitch.

Use an Ex-acto knife or a razor blade to lightly score the clear finish before taking the nut off. This will keep it from chipping. Use regular white "Elmers" glue to put new nut on. use a piece of soft pine against the leading edge of the nut, tap it with a small hammer and it will come off cleanly. clean up any old glue with 220 sand paper and a small wood block. Or you can also use water to soften the old glue and a square piece of wood to scrape the old glue off.

I suppose in Timothy's case, it would be the E and G strings!
