Rutherford is a better bassplayer than people give him credit for.
I love his 4001S through Hiwatt amps tone.

Playing behind the horseshoe, isn't that illegal?

So do I.
BTW, this coming Saturday Rare Blend will be part of the latest series of CPRFFs at The Winchester in Lakewood, Ohio. Come on out.

I love his bass sound. Always have. I first noticed it on
Firth of Fifth.

Yup. That's certainly one of the best variations on "the" tone, IMHO. Mike's actually one of my biggest influences. I always thought he was a great player. Just listen to something like The Lady Lies.

OH YEAH!
A 4001S/RM bass through a Hiwatt = HEAVEN
I use this pic as my avatar, on a couple of other forums. It's also wallpaper on two of my Macs.
I like Rutherford a little earlier... I always liked his sound on "The Fountain Of Salmacis".

Oh,
I seem to remember seeing a photo somewhere of Rutherfords 4001s with the tell tale rubber band on the headstock holding the strings into the nut.
Thats a sure sign of a warped neck dont you think?
Roger waters had one on his Rick,I had the same with the ex-Lodge RM.
Does anyone know what happened to the 4001s/RM that Rutherford played?
He did some great bass work on the earlier Genesis right up to "Lamb".
Classic Rick on the first few albums before he started using the Shergold.

You're right, Pete... there was a band up at the nut. Rutherford's RM was a mess. He was also missing a few knobs, and even replaced a couple with Hiwatt "chicken head" knobs! I have a photo somewhere of it (circa '71), that I took while they were on tour with Van Der Graff... I try and dig it up.

Not necessarily a warped neck. Some players use rubber bands at the headstock for a form of string mute. I went to a Victor Wooten clinic a year ago or so and he talked about how he uses the bands used to to hold hair in a poney-tail at the headstock for muting. He said they have to be just a specific size and when he finds them in the local market or drugstore he buys them up.

Of course, if they had Chromes, they wouldn't need to mute!
