This is an off-the-wall kinda question, open to any that live/drive in the OC...

When leaving John Wayne Airport, would it be a quicker trip to Laguna Beach/Dana Point by taking the 405/I-5, or using CA 73 to the Crown Valley Pkwy?? I know it's not that far away whatever route I take, but I am just curious, thanks to all..

C73 is faster if you don't mine paying a toll($1.75approx.) each way. The I-405 to the I-5 is good depending on rush hour traffic. If traffic is bad: expect 1/2 hour plus to go the distance to Dana Point.

Dale, the cash off peak toll is $4.25 or peak time $5.00. But no question, much faster on the 73 to Laguna Beach (off at the 133). However, if your final destination is really Dana Point, the 405 will generally be about the same time except during rush hours, given that the 405 on ramp is immediately adjacent to the airport, whereas you have to go various routes to get to the 73 from there. Also Laguna Beach traffic is miserable (I know, I live there) until the festivals are done on 31 August.

Thanks John and Dale. My reason for asking was I see that 73 is at the opposite end of the airport than the 405, and at first glance it looked like I could just jump on there, and maybe the volume wouldn't be as bad. As you say the 405 on ramp is right there, I could just head down to San Juan Capistrano or thereabouts and cut in....I know that way better too.

It is all going to depend on whether I fly into OC/John Wayne or San Diego anyway...my 'boss'(girlfriend)Image has a convention in Dana Point in late September, and I may fly out seperate from her to San Diego. It would make more sense(to me)that they'd fly her into OC/John Wayne than LAX, at least I hope that's what they do.

For all you Californians, I SURE hope that data is not radar derived!

The speed is derived from sensors under the roadway. On one of my computers I have a screen shot of the OC Sigalert page that shows a speed of 105 mph ...
