I can't tell you if I will ever need it, but I now understand if you tell me to play the minor 3rd, up an octave. I can go right to it! And most any other interval. I am starting to put together the language with the playing........

Good deal Charly! A little basic music theory can go a long way.

Cool! Dood! Now play it up TWO octaves.

Perhaps borrowing Dane's potatohead bass would make that a bit easier.

A combination of the book Bass Logic (same folks as Fretboard Logic), a website (www.ibreathemusic.com), and the most important, right here at RR, Jdog and JB for questions!

Though I am not a huge fan of Edwards' Bass Logic, I do think it is a much better book than his Fretboard Logic.

My biggest issue with theory is I sometimes need it explained a couple of different ways before the light bulb goes on! And then with my 2 heroes answering anything left over, I'm gettin it!!

The minor 3rd would be the Phrygian minor scale an octave up, right?

Things are starting to click for me, as I have been taking lessons from a pretty good guy. I took lessons last year, just touching on theory. Then I went off on my own and tried to catch up on all of that.

I got to the point where I had the question "How do I string together different scales, a.k.a. how to figure out chord progressions?" That was right around the time that Charly's earlier thread about Bass Logic, chords etc came up. I was really lost.

So I went to this new guy with that question, and it's taken me about 12 lessons to get to the point of even starting to understand it. We are now working on the ideas of harmonizing & chord progressions, starting with an Ionian major scale and running progressions from there. I am pretty much working on 3 ways to finger the Ionian, and work my way around from there using

I - Ionian
ii - Dorian
iii - Phrygian
IV - Lydian
V - Mixolydian
vi - Aeolian
vii - Locrian

progressions.

It's getting more interesting, that's for sure!

I did buy Bass Logic after the earlier thread and was pretty lost. I'll have to give it another shot.
