Is he a hobbit because of the furry bare toes and feet, because of the curious round-doored architecture for short folk, or the voracious appetite that never grows too much fat...

Or is it just because of his last name being Wickersham?

I daresay Marc wants to avoid the 75% drop in resale value over new purchase price the second it gets shipped by Mica....

I have actually always been interested in getting an Alembic, however...it is the dreaded resale value Elys speaks of which made me fear such a purchase.

You buy an Alembic used. They are the best value for $$$ out there by miles. Period.

When you see an very used 80's Ric going for more, then you know the time has come to buy.

I remember a quote years ago, where someone had posted and told either Zon or Tobias that they were thinking about buying one of their basses. The buyer mentioned he had an Alembic, to which the builder replied "Why would you want one of mine then"?

Says it all...

I'll second that. Alembic's are beautiful basses, and are a great value on the used market. Strange compared to the recent market for most vintage guitars.

if you have a few assembly skills then you can build an explorer bass from Warmoth parts ... someday I am going to do a 5 string version ...

I was thinking of buying some Warmouth parts just to give a try on putting something together.

It always starts out as...yeah...I'll build the ultimate P-bass...then how about a cool shape like an Explorer or a V..then it turns into a doubleneck...I price up the parts and resort to...Maybe I should just pick up something at a dealer or Ebay...

If you have a shop like this one, you too, can build your own Seligman, er, Alembic-like bass.

Jeff, I want to build a convertible bass. Yes, Explorer shape, then remove the lower front part, place on back, then I have a V, then I unsnap the buckles in the middle, open it up into a 4 over 8 doubleneck, which in effect will be a "W"...

Shouldn't be too difficult, expensive, and certainly not a waste of time. Oh wait, finally, it must collapse into a size where I can bring it on a plane as carry on.

I'm off to Home Depot and Radio Shack. They should have everything I need to make my dream a reality.
