A long shot on a RIC forum, but I though I'd give it a shot. I want to learn the 4 string Irish tenor banjo, and am looking for a real inexpensive one to learn on. Anybody have one in the back of their closet they are not using?

There is a LITM retail store about ten minutes from my office in San Francicso. They have an immense selection of traditional instruments and carry virtually no commonly-recognized name brands in acoustic instruments. Their own branded stuff is very good value for money.

I did a rather quick search on a couple of dealers' websites. It seems some tenor banjos are tuned G-D-A-E, an octave below mandolins. I thought tenor banjos were tuned C-G-D-A. Or is that an old-fashioned tuning used in the early days when jazz band rhythm sections commonly had banjo players?

GDAE, is Irish tuning CGDA seems to be standard tuning. I'm just starting to learn this stuff about banjos. Thanks for the above suggestions. I'll check them out.
