At long last, please meet my 1984 4003S MG AlemRic

I think many of you know I've been trying to order Alembic "Activators" for one of my Ric's for a long time. Being Alembic is a very small company, when the one or two key players have health issues, things slowed down to a crawl, and they wouldn't take my order for over 7 months.

Anyway, with my frustration at an all time high, I posted a WANT AD over at the Alembic forum and asked if the fellow who won this bass last year would be interested in selling it. My sniper misfired and he beat me out by a few bucks!

To my surprise, the owner contacted me (even though someone else tried to snake it out of my hands again behind my back) and agreed after about two weeks to sell it to me. He felt I've been after it for so long, I would appreciate it more than he.

The bass is setup with Alembic pickups and Alembic active electronics.

I missed getting this bass TWICE in the past 3 years, so I consider myself VERY lucky to have her. I will get it back to "stock" looking with some time. It sounds amazingly RIC like, but with an Alembic edge. I'm even going to install the bridge pickup cover, I want it to LOOK as much as original as possible. Here is a blurb from the original auction....

"REFRET JOB WITH LOW GLOSS FINISH ON ROSEWOOD BOARD, ALL ALEMBIC ELECTRONICS – 2 PICKUPS; MASTER VOLUME; PICKUP BLEND AND INDIVIDUAL LO-PASS FILTER SWEEPS FOR EACH PICKUP, CUSTOM PICKGUARD, ALEMBIC KNOBS, INSET INTO THE BODY ARE BRASS FERRULES FOR EACH OF THE PICKGUARD SCREWS. THIS LAST TOUCH HAS BEEN AN ALEMBIC TRADEMARK FOR YEARS(IT PREVENTS DAMAGE TO THE WOOD) AND IS THE MOST TELLING FEATURE THAT THIS WAS MORE THAN A SIMPLE PICKUP SWAP."

The refret was a butcher job but I will have it addressed in time as well as that pickguard. The battery installs under that horrible pickguard so thankfully, no holes were cut into the bass.

When I told Janey about it, it was on my birthday on 9/10. I thought she was going to kill me! She just looked at me and said, "Happy Birthday, get the bass".

It was shipped on 9/11 (the same day as Janey's car accident) so my joy was really cut short. BUT, hopefully, I will have plenty of time to enjoy it!

She sports a nice thin neck, right in between my CS & V63 and it ROCKS. I can't wait to get it looking as close to LOOKING as stock as possible!

I know a lot of you folks hate active pickups, but this solves a problem that I've had with noise for YEARS! To me, it is the best of both worlds!

So, what do you have to let go for this one?

Thanks Jeff!

Actually, nothing for this one! Aren't birthday's great? Image Since she allowed me the $$$$ for the Alembic pickups (and as luck would have it, this bass was less than that cost) it's a freebie!

However, up on the chopping block as of right now...my 73 4001BG and MOST LIKELY, my 1981 4001 Walnut to pay for the bass sins of my past. Image

That SHOULD buy me some space with the Mrs....until my 4003FL or my 4004Cii arrives! YIKES! I HOPE.

I'm going to hold off until October before I list anything on Ebay. I'm HOPING those numbers start to climb again!

Free is good!

I just bought myself a new/old guitar today. Check out the thread "I need your..." in the Curmudgeon's forum.

Tony,
I'd keep the Alembic electronics, but try to make it look more stock with a stock lower guard and RIC knobs. The shape of the lower guard looks like it was taken from another year 4000 series bass so I would make sure I got just the right shape.

I would leave it just as it is. that is if you like the way it looks and sounds ... I like the look of the soap bar in the bridge surround ...

hmm ... I bet that bass would make a good 5 string bass ...

Dane,

That is the first thing on my list, those knobs and that guard. I contacted Tony over at Pickguardian and I'm waiting to hear back from him.

I couldn't figure out what or where the previous owner got that guard from. But, being the brass ferules are sunk into the body, I don't know how much more I can have shaved off and still have it align with the screw holes.

After I have that done, I'll probably have a kill switch installed just to make the visual setup complete. That is probably the easiest way to go.

Congrats and enjoy it Tony! How does it sound?

I agree with Dane about making it look stock with the right guard and knobs.

Hmm, here in the US I always saw it spelled as Mazel. Hey, what do us on this side of the pond know anyway! Image

Tony,

Glad that worked out for you. I did not forget that you wanted those pickups and one day may have sold my set, but am in no mind to do so now.

What are the controls on yours? I'm considering pulling the stock electronics out of my '86 BT Ruby 4003 and putting my Alembic pickups in it.

Are those things still going for over $1000 per set? Or is there a discount source for them these days?
