I attended the vintage guitarfair in Veenendaal Holland today and I saw the most mouthwatering Rickenbacker 4000 bass I ever saw.
It was modified to carry a neck pickup but man what a beauty.

Unfortunately, I didn't have enough on me to buy it.

What incredible figure in the wood!

Shame it's not original. It looks like someone stained the wings too, making it look like a V63.
That is a wonderful piece of wood though, and certainly one of the best 4000 basses I've seen.

Beautiful maple! There's nothing quite like the real thing!

Andrew, the wings weren't stained, it had genuine walnut wings.

When did Ric make 4000 basses with set necks and walnut head wings and the skunk stripe?
Weren't the old ones with the walnut headwings neck through?

Those wings definitely aren't original.

Never say never John, but I'd be surprised if they were too on a '76.
Yes Jeff, they are neck thru' up until '72.

Too true Andy, but we rarely see oddities from the late 70's. I think during that time, the demand for Rick basses was too high and the company simply had no time for special orders - much like today.
