Midnight Blue Finish

Hey, my MID 330 is arriving on Tuesday, so I'm getting pretty anxious. I've never actually seen a MID RIC in real life before, however.

From the few pictures I've seen of it, some show a very reflective mirror-like finish, similar to the other Glo colors.

From other pictures, it seems to look more metallic.

So does the finish vary greatly from one guitar to another, or is the MID finish just very chameleon-like?

Hi Robert, and welcome to the RRF! :D Here is some info on the MID color over the years. It is a totally opaque color, not a "glo" and not a semi-transparent finish at all. The year of manufacture of yours will determine which of these shades of MID you are likely to get....

I have an older 330BT MID, and the midnight blue on it was an older shade that was a rich blue in flash photos and almost purplish in some incandescent lighting, but absolutely no metallic in it at all:

And the shade changed years later, so that this 1995 350v63 MID that I purchased is a bright blue, almost an electric blue, with a definite pronounced metallic silver embedded within the paint, but highly polished and mirror-like:

Now, the shade has changed to a truly midnight blue, like this 4003, starting in 2007 (just like the blue color of my Ford Excursion) with a definite but subdued metallic formulation - pretty much like your second photo of your post:

Robert: Welcome to the RickResource Forum and thanks for sharing the expected arrival of your Model 330 MID.Over the years this colour seems to have varied somewhat, however, in recent times it appears quite consistent. Different lighting conditions and flash settings can certainly result in quite a different appearance.

We look forward to your comments about this instrument when you finally have it in your hands.

Elys: Simply gorgeous photos!

I am not normally a fan of blues and greens on stringed instruments but that 4003 looks amazing!

Elys, how about sending me a nice hi res version of that if you have one, thanks. :)

I as well had not seen the MID blue in real life until Aitch bought his 350v63! Loved it, so I bought a 330/12 MID. The color knocks me out each time i open the case! I'm sure you will be more than pleased with your new purchase!

I like the newer, darker Midnight Blue. I'd like to see it even darker yet.

Elys, are you sure there's NO metallic in that early MID finish? I thought that MID always had a bit o' flake in it...in the picture, it sure looks a bit iridescent...

At any rate, the new MID is beyond gorgeous...
