This is another thing I've been doing for years, and the pattern I've come up with here, is ESPECIALLY effective if your playing the song solo.

(That's "All by yourself", for those of you that don't dont abla. :0)

Sorry, couldn't resist. Don't be mad. :0)

Try these chords during the verse: "Sun, roll on my face...I hear you...Down below...Movin' slow...And it's morning...

Ok, here we go:

XX0770 XX0553 XX0433 XX011100

The first chord is a D add2, the second is a C/D, the third is a G/D, and the forth, way up the neck (11th & 10th fret), is another D add2. (It's also the "Pretty opening chord" to Chrissie Hynde's "Back on the chain gang")

The big thing here: KEEP THAT D STRING RINGING OPEN THROUGHOUT!! :0)

What's going on now is, your kind of playing a hybrid between Roger & David's guitars, and also capturing a bit of Chris' Mandolin as well.

The very first sung note; "Sun", David begins on a suspended 2nd, meaning he starts singing an "E" note in a "D" chord. This requires EXCEPTIONAL vocal control.

In other words, unless your "Good", IT AIN'T EASY...

By leaving the high E string open here on this first chord, right when each verse starts, the guitar, as well as the vocal personify this odd, yet pretty note. (One of the guitar parts on the record indeed does hit this "E" note, as well)

Lastly, play this whole figure in a double time Banjo roll fashion.

Chris' mandolin is double time on the record, and this "Hybrid" guitar part also helps to "Grab" that feeling.

Alot of folks forget, that the Mandolin having that open A string right under the high "E" lends to some really cool overtones in pop music, and not just folk and bluegrass.

A wonderful example here would be the Guitar & Mandolin interplay during Zep's "Going To California"; although, I would call that more Folk than anything else.

Shut up, Chris.

Add a Bass player to this "New" guitar part, and it will almost sound like you have all the parts going.

A few months ago, I played this "Version" for a friend over the phone, and she liked it! ;0)

As far as Hugh Masekala and the machine guns, your on your own.

Try it!

Christian

nice job christian, mastery of the variations of `D` is the key to the 12 string. and it's fun :)
