The small scale of the 325, alternate tuning friendly?

I guess it's no surprise that the best known player of the 235 model was John Lennon and he used his in standard tuning. But I was wondering, wouldn't the small scale of that guitar have lend itself for alternate tunings?
For example: could you actually string it up with a thin gauge of strings and tune it up to an A-A tuning rather than the normal E-E tuning? Has anybody ever done that?
I was watching this clip of Pat Metehny playing a half scale custom Ibanez which got me thinking about this. Wouldn't a 325 be perfect for that kind of stuff too?
