just received the 1973 FG i am purchasing. the seller was trusting enough to ship it before payment to ensure it was what i was expecting...

incredible condition, mint original case (did it ever leave the house?), original polishing cloth, low=profile pup cover..stunning.

suddenly not missing my Walnut as badly.

ha! right Jeff...i couldn't taint a Ric.

here's a question:

the owner said t the original strings are included. would these be the flats w/ the purple thread, or the rounds w/ the silver thread?

i'm assuming it would be the flats.

Should be the flats with the purple silk at the bridge end only. Cool!

How do they sound/feel after 34 years, Bryce? Those would be the RIC (Maxima) flats!

it is still at the office, will polish it up and post photos asap.

John, the strings are not currently on the bass, a set of rounds are...(slight lift).

if only it were from earlier in the production year, with all with desirable features; still beautiful though!

Make sure you get those Maximas mounted asap! I've got a new old stock set on my Feb. '74, and they're heavenly. Also have them on a few of my Hofners at the moment. Same thing! :D

When I bought my case queen '76 4001FG a few years back, there was a set of flatwounds with purple threads in the case. The guy who sold it to me only had it for a couple months and said that those were the strings that were on it when he bought it and he thought they were original.

Fooishly, I threw them away!

Not too long ago, I bought a quantity of these Maxima purple-thread original Rick strings, never used and NOS, for around $100 each. Gladly.

Yep, you should have saved them. Even used, you would have gotten north of $100 for them from any serious Rick 4001 restorer..

+1 on the sound/feel of the Rick/Maxima flats, and also +1 to Jeff's shoulda on keeping that old set.

Elys, you're the bum who scarfed all the rest, huh?! :) I guess I could have coughed up for another set or two when I got mine....
