Great Old Songs For RIC 12-String

Has anyone else ever been in a musical rut then come across an old song that opens a door to new fun and enjoyment ? I'm talking songs that either had RIC 12 string guitars on the original recordings or songs that lend themselves to the special majic, songs other than the ovius Beatles and Byrds. I'll throw out two to get us started, then lets go one at a time. Just for fun !
1] The Beach Boys - California Girls

2] The Bo Brummels - Just a little

It's up to you to find the recordings to listen to. What can you come up with :?:

In my coffeehouse days, I would do a cover of Jewel's "You Were Meant For Me" on a Rick 12. I played that song at my first and last dinner cruise gig. The ship's power went out halfway through the song, so I just walked up, in front of the mic, and sang to the room like a REAL MAN!!! The 330/12JD held its own, and I kept the song in my set lists for quite a while.

I also like playing "Alison" by Elvis Costello on a Rick 12. Okay, I like playing everything on a Rick 12.

The old Gus Cannon song that was popularized by The Rooftop Singers back in '63, "Walk Right In", is always a fun tune for the 12 string. I've an instrumental version here on LP that was done by Glen Campbell that's really great!

Another fun thing to try are old fiddle reels and Bluegrass tunes. I like songs that incorporate crosspicking - like George Shuffler or Maybelle Carter would do - as well as stuff like "Sally Goodin", "I Am A Pilgrim" and others.

Lying Eyes reminds me of End of the Inocense, but i have to go and gargle with a 4 oz. glass of gravel before i sing it.

I forgot to mention that I changed the key of "Lyin' Eyes" entirely from the original G major to E major. That way, I can get my McGuinn licks in. And the lower key suits my voice better, too.

Did I mention "Ramblin' Man" by the Allman Bros. Band?

I............................ vi
Pretty woman, walkin' down the street
I......................... ..... .. vi
Pretty woman, the kind I'd like to meet
......... IV
Pretty woman
V7
Don't walk a-way....hey....OK.....

That's basically it. The opening guitar riff outlines a V9 arpeggio.
P.S. The dots were the only way I could figure out how to add spaces so the chords would line up correctly. Gotta be a better way. :?

if you use the CODE tags it also works better I thought...

Code: Select all

I vi
Pretty woman, walkin' down the street
the spacing is of though, takes some work to get everything to line up

Rather than fool around with trying to match up chord positions above the lyrics, here's a link. The only quibble I have is I'd substitute the vim7 for the IV chord in the verses. Note how the song changes keys when the bridge comes around:
Pretty woman, stop a while
Pretty woman talk a while....etc.

but still makes use of the tried and true I, vi, ii, V7 progression.

Then it goes back to the original key for
'Cause I need you,
I'll treat you right...etc.

Oops, I should have said "...substitute the iim7
for the IV chord in the verses."
(What was I thinking?)
