I love listening to the blues, and I love hanging out at the Rickresource forum, so I figured it'd be killer to combine both!

I know there are alot of bluesheads out there (There has to be!) so go ahead! show us Yer blues!

I'm getting a Zoom H4 in the following weeks, so I'll be able to post a bunch too (once I record them...) so you'll be in good company! hahaha

The most traditional of the two there is "Just Like A Woman" which is a take on a Muddy Waters-type groove. I'm playing both regular and slide guitar on the track. The regular guitar part is my 2001 Gibson Historic '56 reissue played with my thumb and index fingers through a 1959 Fender 5E3 tweed Deluxe Amp in a Jimmie Rogers vein. The slide part was an overdub with the same rig but is in the classic Muddy style.

That's about the best I can do for now.

Love the Harp on that track! You've got a great ear for the style! The vocals are also very retro sounding! If you'd record (or playback) on a low-fi system, you could convince people it was from 1956!!!

Thanks, Nick! I have a number of Blues styles in my bag; everything from West Coast Jump & T-Bone Walker to Freddie King & Jr. Watson. The disc from which that track came from was produced by Anson Funderburgh. I have a couple of tracks from a 2001 release where we had Anson as a guest and the two of us are playing together; lots of fun! A review from the April 2002 edition of Vintage Guitar Magazine stated that on a number of tracks, it sounds as though he and I had been playing together in the same band for a few years - a really nice thing to say.

If I can figure out how to post my mp3 or wave files, I can share some of those........unfortunately, I'm not that smart!

HA! I actually figured it out on my own.....guess that I'm not such a primate afterall!

I've loaded 5 tracks from the CD Do What'cha Do by my former group, Li'l Ronnie & The Grand Dukes. Represented are 5 different styles from '40s Jump, Chicago harp instrumentals and after hours Blues to Excello-styled Swamp Blues. I'd love to share the cuts with Anson from 2001, but I don't own the copyrights.

The guitars used on these tracks were my old Gibson ES-5 w/ three P90s and the '56 goldtop reissue. Everything was recorded through the 1959 Deluxe. I used different techniques to produce different tones from a just a pick, to a pick and fingers to just my thumb and index finger. One track utilizes a tuning in where I tuned everything down a full step (Wine Headed Woman). On Long Distance Lover, I use my thumb and index and on two tracks - Take A Chance and Just A Fool - I'm playing the ES-5; notice the difference in tones from the same guitar and rig. Newspaper Blues. This is a song that I wrote in 1975. It was the first song that I recorded when I put my home studio together. Although I am not a recording engineer I wanted to find a way to get a vintage live feel to the track. To that end I recorded a Strat through a Pignose directly into the board for the lead guitar parts. I understand through my research that that's how a number of neat sounding guitar parts were recorded back then. The vocals were processed to sound like a live recording.

I have a few other blues/jazz cuts but that was the first one of mine that came to mind that is readily accessible and one that I own the copyright to.

Good track Brian! I think the "live" sounding vocals were the part I liked the least, I dunno, it just sounded too processed and less live.

You can try this cool trick though. when you record vocals, find a big room with a good sounding reverberation. Set one mic regularly, like you usually would to record vocals. Then set up a second mic further in the room with the input gain higher, so that it picks up your voice, but drenched in reverb. Mixing the two together (in stereo also helps) would really give that cool live feel!

I love hearing these home made tracks! I like when people use different recording techniques to coax new different sounds and feels... it pushes the boundaries and sometimes the results are less than perfect but the important part is, they inspire! they truly do. Your post alone sent me on a wild tangent of different ways to get a live sound without having all the instruments played at once in a big room! lots of ideas flowed through!

Placing the drums at the bottom of a staircase and recording up close and at the top of the stairs!

playing back the guitar track on a CD player inside a bathroom and re-recording it!

Limitless possibilities await someone who doesn't limit himself!
