I posted this question at the "wanted" thread and decided this might bring some response -
I have a set of wavy Grovers for a May 1973 BG but got them with no ferrules. Anyone have an idea for a suitable replacement? and even better - anyone have 4 lying around collecting dust?

Keep your eye on ebay. They do show up occasionally. I missed out on a set, but then another set came up for sale a few weeks later and I got those. I don't have spares though.

I can look to see if the new 4003 Schaller bushings would work if you'd like me to, but I'm not sure if you'd be able to get a set without buying the tuners.

The newer ones may fit but they are not as "wide" on the headstock's surface. I was thinking of having some custom built if I won't find any.

These came in both chrome plate (maybe nickel too) and black ABS plastic.

If you know someone with a lathe, they can be made in less than an hour from either black ABS rod stock, or brass, which can then be plated.

Gil - Yep, I have your number (and your Grovers... ) I would like to do this so we will need one of your Grover's ferrules as a sample for the material and size and make 'em! Take your time....till the beginning of next week

Would it be the same process to make ferrules like the old '60s Klusons, or even possibly to grind down the currently available RIC ones to the '60s diameter? I've been waiting for RIC to make the C64 ferrules available in the boutique, but I'm afraid I'm running out of patience and would love to fabricate the "correct" part if possible. Sorry to shift the topic from the Grovers....

This is correct, except that this type of ferrule has a ribbed knurl to help it grip the wood of the headstock. This is difficult to fabricate. I'd suggest a typical crosshatch knurl, as this area is not visible once the ferrules are pressed into place.

Thanks again, John, for the tip - for anyone else interested, the C64 keywinds are in fact available if you call. I had to call back after receiving them, though, as they forgot to include the all-important ferrules (or bushings in RIC terminology) in the shipment! But I'm very happy to have my reverse-wind tuners at last (and to not have to spend $200+ on the 'Bay for an old set)....
