Hi guys,
Anyone own or played a new 4003 with the toaster? I am selling my CS on ebay right now but I want to get another Rick for less money. I was thinking about snatching a v63 on the bay but also noticed you can get 4003 with toaster.

Is this bass as mean and hot sounding as the CS model. I know that nothing will sound as hot as the CS but is the toaster the same cap etc as the CS or V63 or is it wired differently? I also heard the newer 4003's have a thinner neck like the 4001....

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Brad, the toaster will be less aggressive than the high gain, but if you are used to the 4001CS, it will be similiar, but not quite the thump as it is in the 1" position on the 4003 and not the 1/2" like the CS. The CS has the RIHS with an inline cap, the V63 has the RIHS without the cap, and the 4003 has the high gain with or without the cap (tone switch). All these pups are wound to about 11.4k, but the RIHS has 4 alnico5 rod magnets as pole pieces and the high gain has the plastic magnet bar under the coil with the adjustable screw pole pieces.

Does anyone know if they use 330k or 500k tonepots in the CS/v63?

I couldn't find the CS schematic, but someone posted it had the cap, IIRC.

There's no cap in a CS. I've had 2. I think they used 250k tonepots; the 330s are more recent IIRC. I put 500s in mine a while back.

Thanks for all your help guys. The CS sold last night on ebay at 3:30 am. I had to send her off with one last good licking. Here is a video I did of me and a buddy playing Tool's Sober. As you know Paul D'Amour recorded the whole Undertow album with the CS and it is classic thump. I will surely miss her....

Brad, you got to own it and play it for a while, which is more than most of us, so don't take it too hard! You can always get another Rick, a V63 or a 4003S and get pretty close to that sound. I have a 4003S from 1991 that has the growl, and with a reissue horseshoe on it I bet you'd be there. It is easy to add the toaster and move it to the 1/2" spacing.

Congrats on a clean sale. Oh, and what strings and amp/cabs were you playing in those two videos?

I was playing Ernie ball hybrid slinky's .45, .65, .85, .105 and the amp is a Gallien Krueger 2001RB into a NEO 412 cab. With the vlume not even at 1...LOL
