This is a quote from Ben Hall from a thread over at RIC forum concerning the sudden appearance of some strange "one off finishes".
"You will see some wild one-off color Ricks appearing on the RIC outlet as soon as someone decides to put them up there. These colors and trim/parts combos are pretty cool".
Interesting to say the least..

Cool. What's with the fish references in place of roadie, guitar hero, etc.?

Never did figure that one out either. Must be somebody's idea of a joke.

It's because CS himself has started posting on the corp forum. There is a lengthy thread that makes it all make sense.

I was just thinking about this (yeah, I have a lot to do...) and I have mixed emotions. On one hand I think it is good that RIC is opening up their experiments for public acquisition. Whoever is lucky enough to pick one up is going to have a piece of guitar history and a rare collectible instrument.
On the downside, it is somewhat frustrating that RIC would choose to finish an experimental color/harware combo when they readily admit to an 18-24 month backlog of normal run instruments and colors. As of January, 4004 BBRs will be three years on order with 3 filled (and I don't know about other models, I'm sure others can comment) and that was a price list color for that year. I think three 4004s have been made in the last year (the two NAMM models and a FG Laredo sent to North Coast Music) so it gets a little frustrating to wait on an instrument and know that they are spending time working on guitars that don't fill anyone's order, especially since they are going to ebay. I guess I'm just saying I would feel a little better about it if the backlog was less of an issue.
I'll get off of my soapbox now. I'm just getting anxious to actually get my bass

I understand you frustration,,,but thats what makes RIC unique. They wont compromise quality or integrity. They stick to their California factory,,,made in USA concept. They do however experiment,, and sometimes offer a Color of the year.
This is what I think is happening with the "one-off" finishes.
Dont condemn them,,,embrace them.

I share your frustration. I've been trying to be good about waiting for my 360 12 string. And I also see it from RIC's point of view, as well.
But I guess that's the price we pay for wanting something out of the ordinary, something quite distinctive. Maybe there should be some sort of support group for all those of us trying hard to be patient.

The vast majority of any color, material or procedural experiments are done outside of normal working hours.

Thanks, Eric. I feel a lot better about it now. I should have known I was being too cynical.
By the way, I love the color of the 650C BBR I bought on ebay a few weeks ago.

I personally think the burst patterns have become more graduated, even, and consistent since Eric got on board. Me likey.

I couldn't agree more. Eric has been a great addition to RIC.
