A very nice May '73 4001MG sold on a $3250.00 Ebay BIN yesterday to Olivia's Vintage. No sparklies, no gap tailpiece. I wonder what Olivia's markup will be?
$3250.00?!! Wow!!!

WOW,
That's a really good price compared to the ~4000 Euros I paid a few months ago on my '72.

It's back up:

I think it's a decent price. It sure looks pretty. Sure, it doesn't have full-width inlays, but the other goodies are all there, and it's in nice condition. I'm not sure buyers are differentiating much between the early 73s with the full width inlays and the May-June 73s without, but with other desirable features.
Anyway you look at it, it looks like a very nice bass, and I'm sure it'll find a new taker at that price. (I sure hope so, as an owner of a June 73!)

yesterday, i inquired about the first listing, but it sold before the seller could respond.
later that evening the seller got back to me to inform me it had been re-listed. "Olivia" pulled out when he/she was told it had been re-fretted.
sure, the fw inlays would be great, as well as the gap-tooth bridge - but everything else is there (including the pup cover and original case).
for 3250 shipped, i'm tempted...

Go for it Brycycle, it won't get cheaper over time!

I can't believe this is worth $3250 without the full inlays or the split tailpiece! Sheesh.

this is a hard call...yes, it will only get more valuable - but with the Holidays on the way, and a '73 FG on the way, i need to resist...not sure if i will be able to though!

Great pics of great basses, JPS. The wood on the MG is super-sweet. Toss that horseshoe into Lake Michigan and the FG would be almost as cool!

The original listing should have stated a refret. The guy from Olivia's asked a bunch of questions after hitting the BIN on my last one and even after payment. They pay decent money for Rics and I suggest that if you want to sell one, contact them directly, you'll likely get your price.

I have already decided to put the high gain back in the FG 4001, so I suppose Lake Michigan may get a horseshoe in the bottom of it!

Of course, Lake Erie is much closer, though.

OV have paid top $$$ for Ric basses recently, and $3250 for a '73 without the goodies would be another high water mark. That's a little over the odds generally IMO, but may well be an indication of where the market's going.
It just shows you how far these early 70's basses have come in the last couple of years in the eyes of the collector. Their contemporaries lag far behind. I just picked up an early 74 Precision, with maple neck, for $400 last month and it's a great bass. The days of finding cheap Ric's are basically over unless you get really lucky.

NOW you're talkin', Jeff. You're way too good a player to follow the herd!
