So I'm getting ready for work this morning and flipping through the channels and caught this scene(pic below) where these three girls are beating on some drums, the two girls on the ends had their guitars slung around to their backs. I'm half asleep trying to drink some coffee and wake up and I'm thinking about how the guitar on the right looks like it has a RIC headstock shape. A couple of minutes later they whip their guitars around and the bass is a jetglo Laredo with maple fretboard, the guitar player had a black Strat with maple fretboard. I was very shocked to see such a rare bass making an appearance in a movie but there it was, very cool. The movie was called Bandits, it was from Germany and made in 1997. You couldn't tell from the music if the Laredo was actually being used for the music, they may have just picked it because it matched the Strat so well for color combination. I searched the net for pics and only came up with this one, supposedly there is something on Youtube that shows the girls playing, but the "tube" is blocked at my work and I can't see it.

Found some more pics searching the web, it appears that somebody connected with making the movie is a rick bass fan.

There is a 4004L like that one for sale in Holland. I like the looks of it, but how is the sound of a 4004L?

nice...

in the recent release. "Control", the story of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, the bass player plays a (well two) 4001's.

It is a tad different from a 4001/4003 bass - still a Ric sound but differnt. I call it a Gibson Ripper on Rickenbacker steriods. I love the sound!

I agree with Tom, it's a different sound than the 4001/4003, a darker, thicker sound due to the hb1 humbuckers. I like my 4004's with DR rounds, Hi Beams or Low Riders, played through Markbass amplification and of course, a fifth string added to tighten up the string spacing. What I really love about the sound is the massive amounts of growl, you can really dial in a very angry menacing bass sound. I haven't tried a lot of flats on mine but I might in the future just to see what that sounds like.
