I realize it is totally against the RickResource Forum bylaws and creed but I have officially downsized to just one Ric......my LK. As I've posted in several other threads I sold off my Red and Blackened Laredos to help finance my Wal 5 string purchase. I could have kept the Rics along with the Wal but I'm more a player than a collector so I didn't want 'em just sitting around since I really have no use/need for them. While I am thrilled with the Wal and regret nothing it just seems weird to only have one Ric in the arsenal AND to have a non-Ric to play. It's the first time since about '92 that I've only had one. If I'm lucky enough to fall into a good deal on something special (4002, 4005 or ????) I may add another at some point but I'm actually quite content at the moment and love the change of pace of playing something different.....it's really helped to get me out of playing/creative rut.

On the bright side....I'll only have one Ric to lug around at MARF III (or the next confluence).

Those look great/gorgeous Brian, but they would drive me crazy! The one has three pups, and the other has no switch! I am so in love with VVTT and a 3 way, I did it to my P/J! I only flip the switch during performance for tone variance. Down for fast stuff, middle for "middle", and up for the slow ballads. I adjust the vols for equal vol otherwise....AAACCKKKKK!

I don't use effects so that's all I got other than position of the right hand......




Anyways, back to your beauties, they make a great couple!

Brian, if you are only to have ONE, an LK is a pretty amazing RIC.

Actually Charly the Wal controls are probably something you'd like. vol/blend/tone/tone. The tones are more useable throughout their range. I find the Ric tones are basically on and off with nothing useable in between (IMO)....I always left them full and got variations from my attack.

Three of the Wal pots are push/pull pots. On the tone controls pulling the pots acts as sort of a tone boost (accentuates the frequency where the tone is set)......I may be "off" slightly in my description since I'm not sure how to describe it and I'm still studying up on 'em. Basically it just sounds more active and allows a little more fine tuning to your tone. There is also a push/pull pot for the volume that's referred to as "pick attack"....it adds a boost to the high-ish mids (I saw it described as this on another Forum). It just sharpens things a bit.....it makes my sloppy fingerstyle sound a little more clear (and I can use whatever help I can get).

It's quite intuitive and easy to get a great tone from AND has lots of great tonal variations. I certainly love the passive simplicity of my Ric and have never found it lacking in any way but also enjoy the new options available on the Wal. The best of both worlds for my needs. I can't wait to wire the LK vol/vol/vol/tone for more variations.....still not sure how to wire in the toggle though.

I agree with Rikk, if you're only going to have one Rick, the LK is a cool one!

That does sound interesting! The blend gives more variation than the switch!


I thought the G&L L-2500 I had for a few weeks had great variation in tone, my issue was, it sounded "active". It's hard to explain, but I even backed out of the high gain passive P and J pups for the P/J. I ended up with stock vintage!

Brian, I am pretty sure the one pot switch acts just like a Q switch on an Alembic, it add a peak to the frequency that the tone control is set at, also known as high Q.

If you had to have just two basses you couldn't wrong with those two, although some people would say those are so collectible they would be hard to gig with for fear of damage. We know there will be more basses in your future though....... .
